CHURCH CUSTODIAN (SEXTON)
BALLS MILLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Sexton has the direct responsibility for the general cleaning and light maintenance of the church interior. The Sexton is under the direction of the Trustees. Any employee relations concerns should be brought to the attention of the Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee (SPPRC) according to The Book of Discipline.
EDUCATION:
No formal education is required beyond a basic understanding of cleaning procedures.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
* No previous work experience is required.
* Individual will know how to perform janitorial duties.
EQUIPMENT:
Cleaning equipment and supplies will be furnished by Balls Mills UMC.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB:
Weekly:
* Vacuum as needed all carpeting in the church; maintain vacuums as necessary.
* Sweep and mop as needed all linoleum or tile floors, including stairs and stairwells.
* Clean and sanitize restrooms, including mopping of floors and maintain all toilet necessities (i.e. soap, toilet tissue, towels, etc.).
* Clean and sanitize water fountains.
* Empty all waste cans and dispose of same in containers provided for weekly pickup by garbage collection persons.
* Dust windowsills, baseboards, pews, radiator covers, baptismal font, altar and choir area.
* Maintain a clean sanctuary by straightening hymnals and bibles in racks and disposing of old bulletins and envelopes from pews and floor.
* Exhibit a spirit of positive cooperation with the staff and an active concern for the life and mission of the church.
As Needed:
* Add pencils, pew cards, and visitor cards.
* Sponge-clean classroom tables and chairs.
* Clean all kitchens, kitchenettes, and basic appliances.
* Change light bulbs that can be easily reached.
* Sweep outside steps to keep approaches to doors clear.
* Scrub rubber mats at doorways.
* Wash glass in doors and the plexiglass in balcony.
* Maintain all necessary cleaning items (i.e. mops and cleaning liquids) and inform purchasing agent when supplies are needed.
* Inform the trustees of any major problems relating to the responsibility of the job and report any personnel problems to SPPRC liaison person.
SPECIAL DUTIES:
* Perform all necessary cleaning before and/or after all special services. Work performed in association with weddings and other special events will be done for supplemental pay.
* Clean candle wax from pews and carpet after Christmas Eve service.
* Clean brass implements (i.e. candleholders, cross, vases, collection plates, etc.) at least two times a year.
* Perform all necessary cleaning and/or sanitizing that may be required from time to time due to extraordinary conditions. Work performed in association with these conditions will be done for supplemental pay to be negotiated according to work performed.
The above statements reflect only the general responsibilities and may not include all duties the custodian will need to perform.
SALARY:
Individual receives pay on a monthly basis. Additional compensation will be paid for weddings and other special events according to church guidelines.
TIME OFF:
As this position is part-time with no set schedule, no fully-paid time off is granted. Compensated time off can be granted by the SPPRC with appropriate advance notice and available replacement personnel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
* Job requires full range of body motion including finger/feet dexterity and hand-eye coordination, and may require periodic heavy lifting. Job also requires corrected vision to normal range.
* Job may from time to time require the use of strong cleaning and sanitizing chemicals and the use of job-specific personal protective equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The individual will work primarily inside the church building.
CLEARANCES:
* Employment is contingent on obtaining PA State Police Clearance, PA Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Fingerprinting Clearance. The church will pay for clearances of candidate for employment. The candidate must also complete a Federal Form I-9 (Employee Eligibility Verification Form).
* To maintain employment, employees must maintain current and valid clearances. Employees must renew clearances, and submit renewed clearances to the chair of SPRC before the clearance on file expires. Pa law currently dictates that clearances are valid for 5 years.
